What country are you calling 0845 numbers from?

Call 0845 numbers from abroad

To start off, it’s worth knowing 0845 numbers are Non-geographic, premium rate numbers. 0845 prefixed numbers are typically cheaper than 0870 numbers and according to Ofcom’s official site, they range from 0 to 7p per minute for mobile and 8p to 15 p for landline, so for mobiles at least they occupy the scope of prices directly below the 0870 range. The access charge for 0845 numbers, when applicable, can range from 8p to 65p, which is the boundary for 0870 numbers also. The price within this bracket of course depends on the provider that the customer uses.

Numbers from 0845 numbers

Services
There are numerous benefits for companies using 0845 numbers, so they have become highly valuable to many businesses. Firstly they can easily be re-routed if a business country location needs to be changed. Also these numbers are almost always only numbers that can receive calls and are allocated for the exclusive use of commercial parties. These parties will likely be getting a high volume of traffic and bring in a decent income from this alone. Therefore businesses are attracted to them as a subsidiary option and to balance other costs the business might have . They are commonly used for ticket booking, for delivery by package tracking services, for information, support and advisory calls and for conference call services.
Activites

From 2009 BT, Britain's biggest fixed-line provider and some other phone providers have included calls to 0845 and 0870 numbers in their call packages with special conditions. This means that customers of these providers likely don’t need to worry about access charges when calling these numbers, but still need to consider the service premiums, charged per minute. Also being included in top UK telecom provider call plans does not necessarily mean they are part of Telecoms interconnect agreements, so it is likely still not possible to call them overseas and Losali would be needed to allow such a connection.

History

0845 numbers have had a bad reputation in the past. One reason for this is the use of advertising 0845 numbers by scammers to redirect callers to companies they really intended to call whilst siphoning the per minute costs from the time the caller is on the phone. Due to their unpopularity amongst the public and the law in 2014 which banned 0845 numbers from being used for customer service lines, many companies have moved from 0845 to the directly corresponding 0345. In fact 034 and 037 prefixed numbers have been reserved exactly for these types of businesses . This was kind of like history repeating itself because in 2001, 0345 and 0645 prefixed numbers were replaced by 0845 numbers and taken out of action, 5 years after the 0845 prefix was first introduced. As people mistake 0345 numbers as being toll-free numbers, they actually attract a similar volume to geographic rate lines. Still they are capped at local rates, so they cannot go higher than the rate of 01 or 02 numbers. The costs of 0345 numbers as substitutes for 0845s are up to 9p per minute via landline and from 3p to 55p per minute on mobile phone.
